I actually think that Jonas and Gabe die because on pg 179 its reads "....he heard music....But perhaps it was only and echo" with that I think with them arriving on christmas day I think it really nincorporates with the biblical allusion.

In the end, Jonas and Gabe survied because in the book it said that a family was waiting for them. (178)

I think that Jonas and Gabe had survived because Jonas knew where the sled was and he could hear something in the distance and he could also see lights in the distance."...all at once he could see lights.and he recognized them now...and they were the red, blue, and yellow lights that twinkled from trees in places where families created and kept memories, where they celebrated love"page 178

In the ending of the Giver I think that Jonas and Gabe die.It may sound real sad, but why I think that is because at the end Jonas says that all he hears is an echo. "but perhaps it was only an echo." (179) Also what i think is that at the ending when he says that he is headed to a better place is when he is dieing "Were almost there Gabe" and suddenly he feels warmth and fills no pain.

In the ending of the giver i think jonas and gabe had lived. Because on chapter 23 page 178 and 179 paragrah 3 jonas had said "... he forced his eyes open as they went downward downward silding and all .At once he could see lights. And he recongized them now. He knew they were shining through the windows of roooms. That they were the red, blue and yellow lights that twinkled from trees in places where families created and kept memories where they . Celebrated love ". He heard something that he knew to be music he heard people singing.Behind him were distances of space and time. From the place he had left he thought he heard music too .but perhaps it was only an echo or the sound of angels from heavenn. But i also think that gabe lived first .Because he was so young and he could`ve been starving even more than jonas .But jonas had been starving had been tired of riding on his bicyle so he could`ve been the first to live or gabe.

In The End Of The Story, I believe Jonas and Gabe lived because in the story it says,"Suddenly he was aware with certainty and joy that below, ahead, they were waiting for him; and that they were waiting, too, for the baby. For the first time, he heard something that he knew to be music. He heard people singing"(p.178-179). Jonas had the feeling that they finally made it to their destination. The music was just reassuring his thought.

I think Jonas and Gabe lived because at the end of the story they rode on a sled down the hill of snow like in one of the memories. so maybe the giver gave him that memory for a reason.as well as "For the first time, he heard something that he knew to be music. He heard people singing. Behind him, across vast distances of space and time, from the place he had left, he thought he heard music too.

I think that Jonas and Gabriel lived. Because Jonas''...forced his eyes to open as they went downward, sliding and all at once he could see lights and he recognized them now. He knew they were shining through the windows of rooms, they were red, blue, and yellow lights that twinkled from trees in places where families created and kept memories, where they celebrated love.(pg178)

What i think happend to Jonas and Gabriel is that they died. its sad to think that they died but when they said,"... they were waiting for him;and they were waiting, too, for the baby"(p178-179)

I think that Jonas and Gabe die because on pg 178-179 it says "He forced his eyes open as they went downward, downward, sliding, and all at once he could see lights, and he recognized them now. He knew they were shining through the windows of rooms, that they were red, blue, yellow lights that twinkled from trees in places where families created and kept memories, where they celebrated love. Downward, downward, faster and faster. Suddenly he was aware with certainty and joy that below, ahead, they were waiting for him; and that they were waiting, too, for the baby." When people die they talk about seeing a bright light and also they people waiting for them could have been Jesus and the other people in heaven from his community for him to come home.

I think that Gabe and Jonas didn't survive because after Jonas got on the sled and he waz going down the hill "Downward, downward, faster and faster. Suddenly he was aware with certainty and joy that below, ahead, they were waiting for him; and that they were waiting, too, for the baby.for the first time, he heard something that he knew to be music. He heard people singing" (178-179). He can feel the joy that the angles are waiting for him;and singing to him and welcoming him into heavin.

I think that Jonas and Gabe both die because on page 179 it says"He heard something that he knew to be music...he heard people singing...but perhaps it was only an echo", it had to have been that th echo was kind of far away and it also to had been that Gabe had to die first because he was just like smushed by Jonas.Jonas's jobs were done and most of his memories were give to the people or to the whole community.

I belive in the "The Giver" that jonas and Gabreil died because their afterlife. "Suddenly he was aware with certaintly and oy that below, ahead, they were waiting for him; and that they were waiting, too, for the baby... He heard something that he knew to be music. He heard people singin. Behind him, across vast distances of space and time, from the place he had left, he tought he heard music too. But perhaps it was and echo." Therefor i beleive they froze to death and contuied into there afterlife.

In the end, Jonas and Gabe die because he lost his hope for what he thought to be Elsewhere. Jonas thought the music he heard was coming from Elsewhere but he soon realized it was only an echo. "Behind him, across vast distances of space and time, from the place he had left, he thought he heard music too. But perhaps it was only an echo." (page 179). Gabe dies first because he was not strong enough to go against the cold, then Jonas dies after a while after realizing he couldn`t reach Elsewhere.

I believe that jonas and gabe live because they saw lights, in many colors...''he forced his eyes to open as they went downward, sliding and all at once he could see lights and he recoginized them now. He knew they were shining through the windows of rooms, they were red, blue, and yellow lights that twinkled from trees in places where families created and kept memories, where they celebrated love.(178)

I myself think that Jonas had died and that Gabe lived because it states," Jonas felt himself losing consciousness and with his whole being willed himself to stay upright atop the sled, clutching Gabriel, keeping him safe"(178). After reading this it made me feel that he knew as soon as he got to that hill that his time was needing to be over but not for Gabriel so he squeezed him tighter to keep him safe.

I think gabriel and jonas lived because on page(179) jonas thinks he hears music and he sees the lights in the houses and he knew that he and gabe would be safe and that they were waiting for him and the baby.

I think that Jonas and Gabe went to heaven, because this ending sounds just like what happend Jesus in many ways. My brother experienced death before and said he felt like he was warm and he could see the light. Im not joking. And they was awaiting for the new baby on Christmas! So what do you think about it?
Cj Velazquez (Guest) said On 12/06/2011 at 2:13 PM
I think in the book the Giver,Jonas and Gabriel lived.I think they lived because when they were going down the hill Jonas saw bright colorfull lights they were red, blue, yellow and he heard music from memories of christmas.i think they and stayd in elsewhere.

I think that Jonas died because in the book because on page(178)" Jonas felt himself losing consciosness...willing himself to stay atop the sled, clutching Gabriel, keeping him safe." Another thing that tells me that Jonas dies is when is said on page(178-179)He forced his eyes open as they went downward, downward, sliding, and all at once he could see lights, and he reconized them now...where they celebrated love...For the first time he heard something that he knew to be music." I also think that Gabe lived because they said o pages(178-179) they were waiting, too, for the baby."

I agree withn alex because on page (179) it does say "...Behind him, across vast distances of space and time, from the place he had left,he thought he heard music too. but perhaps it was only an echo..."it might be saying that they died

the end of jona's journy he could have died oe lived because the author gave us the choice of choosing if he would of been dead or alive.[pg.179]on page'178,jonas felt himself losing consciousness and with his whole being willed himself to stay upright atop the sled, clutching gabriel, keeping him safe.

In the end,Jonas and Gabe died because if you look on page 179 it says,"Behind him, across vast distances of space and time, from the place he had left, he thought he heard music too.But perhaps it was only an echo."It was most likely that the music was an echo miles away.
Nick Ticson (Guest) said On 12/06/2011 at 1:52 PM
I beleive they survived because in the end they finally found the elsewhere they wre looking for.Where love and happiness is at.No releasing or sameness.A place where everyone is different.

I think jonas and gabe died because on page 179 it says "...he thought he heard music too. but perhaps it was only an echo." I think that jonas thought it was someone coming to help him but after he just relized that it wasd just a echo. Thats why I think they died.

I think that Jonas and Gabe died because on page 178 it says that "Jonas felt himself losing consciouness and with his whole being willed himself to stay upright atop the sled, clutching Gabriel, keeping him safe." Jonas may have died from putting all his strength on Gabe from being cold. Then again Jonas hears music and lights page 179.It may have been the gates to heaven because the ones who die say they go towards the light. It may have been his time of dying helping Gabe.
Josiah Armstrong (Guest) said On 12/06/2011 at 1:44 PM
At the end of the giver I believe that Jonas died but Gabriel lived and was raised by the family that lived in the house that Jonas saw at the bottom of the hill. In the novel The Giver by Lois Lowry on page 178 paragraphs two asd four it states "He settledhimself on the sled and hugged Gabe close... Jonas felt himself losing consciousness...upright atop the sled...clutching Gabriel, keeping him safe." That means that Gabriel could have lived because Jonas was keeping him close to him and that could have kept him warm. Also on page 178 paragraph five it says "...he could see lights...He knew they were shining through the windows of rooms..." That shows that there was a house at the bottom of the hill that they were sleding down. Lastly on page 179 paragraph 2 it says "Behind him, across vast distances of space and time, from the place he had left, he thought he heard music too." To me this means that as he died he heard music that he had thought came from his old comunity but if someone was alive how could they hear something that far away? That is what I think happened at the end of the Giver.
Gabrielle Sanchez (Guest) said On 12/06/2011 at 1:42 PM
I beleive Jonas and Gabriel reached elsewhere because,in chapter,23 page,179,paragrapgh 7,it clearly states,"For the first time he heard something that he new to be music. He heard people singing.Behind him across vast distances of space and time'from the place he had left,he thought he heard music too." On thye other hand I strongly desire they reached elsewhere. When he heard the music, which The Giver gave him knowledge about, that is the statement that made me truely beleive that he had reached elsewhere.
Sandra Brock (Guest) said On 12/06/2011 at 1:42 PM
I think that Jonas and Gabriel died and went to heaven because the book is relating to heaven or a place where Jonas will be happy after death. When they left the community Jonas was having a hard time surviving but finally where he thought they were suppost to be was doubted because in The Giver it says,"Behind him, across vast distances of space and time, from the place he left, he thought he heard music too. But perhaps it was only an echo."(pg.179)

I think Jonas and Gabe are dead because on page 178and179 It sayas "they are waiting for him;and that they were waiting, too for the baby." But Jonas new that he had done what he was told to do ,by The Giver and also on page 179 it says that "...mabey it awas an echo".

I do not think Jonas and Gabriel lived because Jonas says "He heard something that he knew to be music. He heard people singing." (pg. 179) which what he could of been hearing was angels singing. Also he says when he gets to the top of the hill and starts going down the book says "Downward, downward, faster and faster. Suddenly he was aware with certainty and joy that below, ahead, they were waiting for him; and that they were waiting, too, for the baby." (pg. 178) He's refering to the angels and God waiting for him to go to Heaven. He also says "He forced his eyes open as they went downward, downward, sliding, and all at once he could see lights, and he recognized them now. He knew they were shining through the windows of rooms, that they were the red, blue, and yellow ligts that twinkled from trees in places where families created and kept memories, where they created love." (pg. 178) He never knew colors until The Giver gave him the memories of them. He also didn't know what love is until he stopped taking the pills for the stirring and felt love for Gabe when he took him to elsewhere. He felt love when he died and went to Heaven.

I agree with Elijah because, in the end I belive that Jonas & Gabe die because in the book everyone talks about how when people get released they go to "elsewhere" & in the end The Giver tells Jonas that when people are released they die. Also because of the wheather tjhey had to go trough it would have been very hard to live without no shelter or protection. Also I belive that if there was an elsewhere Jonas's community wouldn't need a Reciver, because they wouldnt need somebody to hold the momories, if there was an elsewhere there would still be those things that Jonas & The Giver needed to hold. Another reason i belive they did not live is because on page 179 it states, "... for the first time , he heard something that he knew to be music . He heard people singing."

I belive that Jonas and Gabe lived beacuse in the book on page 178 he says "He could see lights...they were red, blue, and yellow lights that twinkled from trees were families created and kept memories." So that meant that he came across a villiage or house.

In the end, of the book the giver jonas and gabeirl died because, in the book the giver on page 179 "... he thought he heard music too. But perhaps it was only an echo." Due to the fact that jonas was freezing to death plus exauhsted from his journy and most people beleive you see a bright light when you die and jonas said he saw twinkling lights on the way down the hill.

I believe Jonas and Gabriel are alive. My reason that I think there alive is because when Jonas was on the top of the hill and on the sled he seen colorful lights on the bottom of the hill and d windows. So there were proply helicopter of the bottom and seach helicopter teams looking for them and they probly saved them when they got on the bottom of the hill.

People say Jonas and Gabe died right there in the snow, but I dont think that.I think they are out there somewhere and I think that their life has changed and their life is happy.i mean, If you really think about it he takes the baby because he is going out to create a future,he take Gabreil aslo in order to start again with a new life.babies always represent the future in the same way children represent the future to adults so why would the author just make them die? when there is a house there with its lights flashing on and music is playing? For the first time, he heard something that he knew to be music. He heard people singing"(178-179).Dont you think this is meant to be a happy ending? One in witch he and gabe had lived by reaching a village? I do.

I personally think that Jonas and Gabe die because on page 173 it says "Gabriel had not cried during the long frightening journey. Now he did. He cried because he was hungry and cold and terribly weak. Jonas cried, too, for the same reasons, and another reason as well. . . He was afraid he could not save Gabriel. He no longer cared about himself."

I believe that Jonas and Gabe lived because the music and people he heard was not prt of his imagination. I agree with Elijah, because when I think about what it says on page 179 I feel like he heard the music of his ending and had not tried to live any longer because Gabe was dead and his memories and feelings were not with him anymore, they were with the people. The hearing of the music might have been him going to heaven and hearing the sound of heaven opening up to him. On page 179, it says "Behind him, across vast distances of space and time, from the place he had left, he thought he heard music too. But perhaps it was only an echo." So that makes me believe that they died and that is why Jonas does not hear music close to him and only in an echo.

I think that Jonas and Gabriel lived because when they were going down the hill Jonas had seen lights and heard music like in his memory of Christmas, so they found a home and those people in that home took them in and Jonas and Gabriel lived and got to celebrate Christmas."He forced his eyes open as they went downward, downward, sliding, and all at once he could see lights, and he recognized them now. He knew they were shinning through the windows of rooms, that they were the red, blue, and yellow lights that twinkled from trees in places where families created and kept memories, where they celebrated love. ...Sudenly he was aware with certainty and joy that below, ahead, they were waiting for him; and they were waiting, too, for the baby. I believe that in the ending of The Giver Jonas and Gabriel live. I believe they live because the people surounding them were not echoes and were not just his imagination. Jonas believed he say and heard; "...he was aware with certainty and joy that below, ahead, they were waiting for him; and that they were waiting, too, for the baby. For the first time, he heard something that he knew to be music. He heard people singing." Page 178 and 179.

In the end, Jonas and Gabe die because in the book on page 179 it says,''...he thought he heard music too. But perhaps it was only an echo''. It was most likely an echo from miles away. Gabe probably dies first because he was so young and was buried by Jonas. Jonas then stopped and died knowing his duties were done and the memories were given to the people.
